Three ski champions opened the winter season in the resort
Some 9,000 tourists a day will try the ski runs in Bansko this season, Bansko Mayor Alexander Kravarov said at the official opening of the season. \"We expect about half a million tourists this winter,\" he added.
Seventeen ski runs expect the skiers. Yesterday, legends Marc Girardelli, Franz Klammer and Rosi Mittermaier slid down the most attractive of them - the Alberto Tomba ski run. Hristo Stoichkov, coach of the Bulgarian national football team, and Ivan Iskrov , governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), were among the first guests who demonstrated their skiing skills.
Fireworks gave the official start to the season. In the evening, World Chess Champion Vesselin Topalov played a game of chess vs Hristo Stoichkov, Stefka Kostadinova, Sessil Karatancheva and 27 politicians and businessmen. President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, Stefka Kostadinova was the only one who scored a draw; all the others lost the game.
