Three Champions Open the Season in Bansko
Stoichkov won a bet on Alberto Tomba ski run
Ski legends Marc Girardelli, Franz Klammer and Rosi Mittermaier holding a slogan: Bansko - the Best Winter Resort in Eastern Europe, slid down the Alberto Tomba ski run. Spectacular fireworks gave the official start to the ski season. Thousands of fans applauded football star Hristo Stoichkov who was one of the first skiers to demostrate their courage and skills in the beautiful mountain resort.
Unlike the last year, when he fell 5 times, now the coach of the Bulgarian international football team successfully reached the end of the 200-meter-long ski track. The effort took him more than 2 minutes while the great ski legends needed only 20 seconds. After the finish, Stoichkov confided that he has won a bet.
"Yesterday I made a bet with one famous journalist that I'll ski down without falling. You witnessed my achievement: I win the wager," Stoichkov said proudly.
At the end of the inaugural day, Rosi Mittermaier and Franz Klammer sampled with pleasure Bulgarian kapama (stewed meat with vegetables and spices) and yoghurt. "I've travelled all around the world in search of beautiful mountain resorts and I can say without any hesitation that Bansko is one of them," said Olympic Champion Franz Klammer.
