Music Stars Support Sofia 2014 Olympic Bid
SOFIA, BULGARIA – 16 June 2006 – Bulgaria’s top music stars will offer their support for the Sofia 2014 Olympic Bid by performing at a major free outdoor concert in downtown Sofia. The concert will kickoff a week of planned Olympic activities coinciding with the International Olympic Committee’s announcement of the 2014 candidature Cities on 22 June and concluding with the traditional Olympic Day celebration on 23 June.
Organised under the banner of “Sofia 2014- We are Together,” the concert will take place on Sunday 18 June from 7-10pm in front of one of Sofia’s landmark buildings, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. This location already has an Olympic history as the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay concluded its visit to Sofia in July 2004 with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on the same stage.
Organisers expect a very large crowd for the event and major music stars from across Bulgaria have confirmed their participation. Artists will include; Lili Ivanova, Mariana Popova, Veselin Marinov, Mastilo, Rumaneza i Enchev, Dessy Tenekedjieva, DEO, Veda Junier Ballet and Karizma. The artists will be joined on stage throughout the performances by all of Sofia 2014s Olympic bid ambassadors.
“This will be a wonderful celebration of youth, sport and music,” said Vesela Letcheva, President of the State Agency for Youth and Sports, one of the supporting organizations of the concert. “The support of our music industry and our major artists will enable us to promote our bid to a whole new audience. Bulgaria has outstanding popular music artists; their support is a tremendous boost and will raise awareness and public support to a whole new level. We are very grateful for their support and the commitment they have demonstrated by performing at this wonderful free concert.”
“We are thrilled to receive the support of our music industry,” said Stefka Kostadinova, President of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee. “The momentum of our bid continues to grow. Within the past few months we have seen the public commitment of our leading government agencies, amazing public support through the opinion polls, our Olympic athletes coming on as bid ambassadors, business support at the Sofia Sports Expo and now the support of our music stars. All areas of Bulgarian society support our bid and that is a wonderful feeling heading into next weeks decision by the IOC on whether Sofia will become a candidate city.”
“Music is one of the most important parts of my sport,” said Olympic bid ambassador and World Champion figure skater, Albena Denkova. “This will be a great celebration of music and sport. It is amazing that so many wonderful artists are behind our bid. Bidding and hosting the Games is not only about sport but about highlighting all the cultural aspects of our country, and we are all extremely proud of our music artists. I can’t wait to see them perform at a concert for Sofia 2014.”
