THE BEAUTIES OF BOROVETS
article by Velina Nacheva, originally published in Sofia Echo's Culture Shock
Rugged snow-capped peaks and soft green slopes, thick forests and wild fruit, quick-flowing rivers and blue lakes, rare plants and game are all parts of Borovets winter resort, which hit the headlines recently after the royal wedding.
Many of the hoteliers and cottage owners said that facilities in the area were renovated and ready for the tourists. Borovets was traditionally popular with royalty, serving as a hunting place for them. Established at the end of the 19th century it gradually developed into a modern ski resort of high class and luxury hotels, haute-cuisine restaurants and varied leisure-time entertainment opportunities.
At 1350 m above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain among age-old pine woods, Borovets is located at the foot of Moussala peak, which is also the highest peak on Balkan Peninsula. Many tourist and ski addicts say the resort is attractive to them because it is close to Sofia and easily accessible. The Alpine resort among Bulgarian winter resort Borovets provides excellent opportunities for the whole range of winter sports like Alpine sports, cross-country skiing, ski-jumps and biathlon.
The ski runs of Borovets are located in three different regions starting off with two sub-regions, Sitniakovo and Martinovi Baraki. The difficult ski runs are used for slaloming while in their lower parts there are special runs for beginners. The second region is called Yastrebets and it consists of three ski runs. And the third subdivision on the resort is Markudjika, which is the highest in the mountain at 2550 m above sea level.
There is entertainment for both children and adults in the more than 50 hotels of the resort and its numerous selection of pubs, restaurants and bars. Bulgarian folklore evenings are an exclusive attraction featuring lively centuries-old rhythms and dances while tasting native Bulgarian cuisine and world-famous Bulgarian wines. The two taverns in Bor and Ela hotels offer typical Bulgarian cuisine and the local specialties in a genuine environment.
Itineraries of ecological and alternative tourism are also organised in groups led by experienced guides. The organised trips lead to picturesque spots in the Rila Mountain like the Seven Rila Lakes, Maliovitsa Peak and Mussala Peak. To see the venue where the wedding of Kalina Saxe Coburg with Kitin Munoz was held, you can join the tour taken there. Officially the season kicks off on December 20.
