SOFIA IS JOINING THE RACE TO HOST 2014 WINTER OLYMPICS
Bulgaria is 2014 Winter Olympics Candidate
The government of Bulgaria approved the motion to submit Sofia’s candidacy for the Winter Olympics in 2014.
Sofia will officially submit its candidacy within a month to the International Olympic Committee. The deadline is July 28.
Bulgaria would use two winter resorts - Bansko and Borovets - for ski events.
On Wednesday, the former Soviet republic of Georgia announced it would bid for 2014. Pyeongchang, South Korea; Oestersund, Sweden; and Salzburg, Austria, have also announced plans to bid. The northeastern Chinese city of Harbin is also considering a bid.
The IOC executive board will meet in June 2006 to decide whether to accept all the bids or trim the list. The 2014 host city will be selected by the full IOC at its session in Guatemala City in July 2007.
