550 million euro will be invested in a new ski resort in the Rila mountain, Bulgaria. Rila Destination is a French-Bulgarian project, eveloped by leading global companies. The new resort is expected to be constracted in the region between Sapareva Banya spa resort and Govedartsi village in the southwestern part of Bulgaria.

The French Accor Group, the largest hotel operator in Europe, PGI Management, Cluster Montagne, Schneider Electric, and the Bulgarian construction consultancy firm Markan are some of the companies showing interest in the project.

The project is in its initial stages, and has not been officially submitted to the relevant state institutions. However, up to EUR 1 M have already been spent in its preparation, adds the publication.

The Destination Rila project plans the creation of a ski center with 155 km of slopes, an aqua center, a golf course, along with other 80 tourist activities. The idea is the resort to work across all seasons and to welcome over 200,000 visitors per year. To compare, a total of 330 – 350,000 tourists spend their holiday in all ski resorts of this country now.

It can be completed within 6 years, and could open over 8 thousand new jobs in the region.

This all sounds great for the region, but do they really NEED another resort? Having been to 'the big 3' resorts several times over the last five years, would this not inconsiderable amount of money be better spent bringing the existing resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo more up to date? With more / better lifts, a proper / 2nd gondola for Bansko, improved / more runs and, slightly biased here, better off-piste / park facilities for snowboarders? My partner and I both love these resorts, it's where we learnt to snowboard and it's changed our lives and brought us close to some great friends. Lets not see the region spoilt by yet another splurge of investment only to witness a 'ghost resort' in another few years when the tourist trade dries up. Anyone heard of global warming !
