Pamporovo is located on approx. 1650 m above sea level in the Perelik range of the Western Rhodopi in one of the most beautiful places of the Orpheus mountain.
It received its name from the convoys of mules of the local man Raicho Belev which followed one another as the wagons of a train (from the Turkish word for "train" - pampor) carrying goods. A man from Chepelare - Chichovsky - built the first tourist hostel here in 1933 thus establishing the present resort.
The specific combination of natural conditions makes the resort beautiful in summer and in winter alike - the large spruce forests, picturesque meadows, strange rocky forms (the Orpheus rock and others), beautiful high peaks - Snejanka (1925), Murgavetz (1858), Orleto etc.

The mountain where Pamporovo is located is composed of marble that drains the water and dries the whole region. The hill has a hunchbacked form and is very airy so the air is always fresh. Due to the influence of the Mediterranean climate the tem- peratures in the resort have small daily variations. The surrounding high peaks keep it from the winds and in winter preserve the snow cover on the Northern slopes of the Snejanka and Murgavetz peaks.
The area is abundant in natural slopes where many ski slopes have been built with different category of difficulty, served by sophisticated technical equipment.
The resort offers 5 chair lifts, 13 tow-lifts and 17.500 meters of alpine ski-tracks. Pamporovo is 16 kilometers from Smolyan, 12 km from Chepelare, 35 kilometers from Devin, 83 km from Plovdiv and 240 km from Sofia. There is a regular bus line connecting it to these cities.
The high TV and radio transmission tower on the Snejanka Peak with a panorama cafe where the whole resort can be views in a clear day can be reached by chair lift. Pamporovo offers many lodging opportunities for tourists.
A number of cosy restaurants offer traditional local and Bulgarian cuisine. An example is the folk restaurant (Mehana) "Chevermeto" where the visitor should try the incredible Rhodope lamb kebab. Pamporovo is the starting point for many marked tourist tracks to: Smolyanski ezera hut (2 h 15 min or 40 min by two lifts), Izgrev Hut (in Chernatitsa - 6 h.), Momchil Yunak hut (in Prespa - 4h30m), Perelik hut (under the mountain leader of Golyam Perelik Peak - 4h30m), the village of Progled (1h30m), the city of Smolyan (3h), The Orpheus Rock (20 min from the Peak of Snejanka), the Murgavets Peak (1h). The Studenets hut is a point of the European route E-8.

A group of us (2 families ) went to Pamporova 2 years ago. It was everyone's (except my) first ski hol. We thoughly enjoyed every moment. Great place, friendly and helpful people. Highly recommed for families. It was a very well organised holiday. Stayed in Rhodopia House which was professionally run and very helpful in waking us up on time for our lessons! We would definitely go again; had a brilliant time :)

our 2nd lovely skiing hol in pampy end of jan 09 and 10. lots of fresh snow were lucky, not for advanced skiiers but if you just want a relaxing leisurely skiing hol and not looking for really challenging runs its grand some good reds, blue and greens, and a couple of blacks for the adventurious.locals grand, have giving into the bell sellers too many times though , if you see a paddy selling bells on resort its me off loading lol.food and craic ok , not overly exspensive, the hotel accom pamperova was lovely no complaints, roll on jan 2011 pg.

We have taken our winter holidays in Pamporovo over the past 4 years. We normally travel with a group of friends. We are all intermediate skiiers, so the terrain is great for us. This year a new run had opened with a 6 man chair lift. It was fab! We always feel so refreshed and healthy after our trip as the mountain air in Pamps. is so healthy. We know which mountain restaurants are the best to eat at and have always found the locals to be so very friendly and helpful. We stay in the chalets in Pamporovo village,( formally known as forest nook 1&2) The chalets are so very cosy with real log burning fires and fully equiped kitchens. We tend to book one chalet between 2 couples, but will comforably accommodate up to 6 persons. When we feel a bit achy or in need of a pamporing session, we have a masseuse come to our chalet. Wonderful!! Apparently, by winter 2010/2011, there will be a new sauna/ fitness suite and beauty room in operation in the new build within 6 steps of the chalets that we rent out. When Ryan air operate into Plovdiv this year, it will be brilliant, as it will only be a short journey to the resort. We stayed at this vilage 3 years ago during the summer period. It was breath-taking. The mountain climate was so theraputic and we were able to relax at the resort's outdoor pool when we were feeling a bit on the lazy side. Being a horse fanatic, myself and 3 others booked through the reception at Pamporovo Village a 3 hour horse riding session. The guide, Stefan took us on a most glorious trip up the Rhodopi mountains ,Whilst my husband and his mates hired quad bikes. We all had a tremendous time and will certainly go over there again for a summer break. Has anyone driven over the border to the Greek coast? I have heard that the new by- pass from Smolyan to Greece is now open. Any feed-back would be very welcome.
