Snow cannons

The company Borosport, which operates the pistes and lifts in Borovets announced that for the new season 2002-2003 all skiers and snowboarders going to Borovets will enjoy the new facility of the resort. Snow cannons will be fully operational for the beginning of the season - 6 machines for artificial snow will be installed. They will be built according to the highest standards and will also provide lights for night skiing/boarding, as well as audio system playing music. The snow cannons will be built on 2 slopes: 1) In front of hotel Rila (Martinovi Baraki 2 and 2) Next to the first one on Martinovi Baraki 3. The total length of the tracks with artificial snow is 2200 meters. On these 2 slopes will be installed 6 guns for artificial snow, with distance of 80 meters between each other.

Both slopes will also have lights located on 54 poles, as well as audio sound syestem. The machines for artificial snow will be supplied by the Austrian company LENKO. The new facilities will provide extended working time of the slopes until 10 pm every day, as well as possibilities for organizing night shows, attractions, etc. The deadline for starting the new facilities for artificial snow is 1 December 2002. The total investment for the project is 3.5 million Levs (approx. 1.8 million Ђ). 3 million have been provided by Borosport and the rest by all local hotels and restaurants. All of them support the project, because the snow cannons will increase the length of the ski season to at least 4 months per year.Mr. BulgariaSki went to Borovets on 25 October 2002 to check how the work goes. Here is his report: "Because it was the end of the work day there were very few workers left on the piste, as well as 1 truck. But it was possible to see the digging work near the piste where the cannons are supposed to be built. There are 2 pistes in front of hotel Rila where the work has been started. From the photos you can see that a sort of channel has been made going up on the hill. I talked to a man who was one of the supervisors of the work and he said that they are working quite hard and the cannons will be completely built till 1 December. He was sure that they will be ready in time for the first snow.

So, all skiers and snowboarders going to Borovets will have this improvement to be independent from the snow fall. Any new information on the building work will be published here." We are due to visit the Flora apartments/hotel on the 1 march 08, does anyone know if the food has improved this year and is the good place to stop? Also are the night slopes working this year and if so how much is it? What is the average price for a beer there I visited Borovets 3 years ago and it was about 50 pence a pint? Do they still use the Lev or are you better to take the pound or Euro. Many thank if you can feed back any answers.

Can i ask, are these snow cannons safe, or do they emit anything dangerous?? (I mean like mobile phone masts and electricity stations do? Or maybe higher levels of electricity??0 Thanks Sue

After yet another wet and miserable Xmas we have booked to go to The Hotel Rila in Borovets for Xmas2003. With the cannons now in place my son will finally have a traditional white xmas, learn to ski, and enjoy the fabulous Bulgarian hospitality. Well done Borovets happy new year.

It's my second Sking holiday which was the first in Austria ,Mayhofen (really good but expensive ) and I have booked a hotel in the Rila (Borovets). The snow cannon looks good but I am hoping the weather in Feb will not need them .

Hi Borovets I cancelled my forth skiing holiday on the trot, to Borovets, in March 2002, for a complete lack of snow. I swallowed the cost and was particularly disappointed as I'd been there the year before in early March and all was well. I ski the upper slopes serviced by the 6 man gondola, which clearly won't have cannons, other than the advanced beginners No 1. However! I'm delighted to learn of the cannons opposite the Rila and No 1 as I'm bringing my twin teenage daughters on Dec 21st for two weeks to learn to ski. Great News and well done Borosport and supporters. See you soon Bulgarian devotee

the snoww cannons will help greatly as long as temperature is low enough for them to work.i was there in jan 02 and the existing ones could not be used for this reason.dont let this put you off though because as long as you can stomach the hotel food you will have a ball.

Hey, now that is cool. Snow cannons will take away a lot of the uncertainty.
